How to Extend Windows Server 2003 System Partition Easily and Safely?

By Richard Nalder

Windows Server 2003 system partition issue

I want to broaden the system partition c: (12GB c:, 200GB D: ) on my 2 yr old dell server PE1800 (windows 2003 x64 std) with 4 SATA drives on a CERC SATA RAID controller 1.5/6ch (build as RAID 5, type basic). The C: is not having enough space because it fills with windows updates. Previously experienced Diskpart - fails with system partition. Partition Magic 8.0 doesn't work in 2003 server

I am believing that great majority of Server 2003 administrators have come across equivalent issue that system partition not having enough space. And it is sometimes complicated to allow them to resolve the problem by reason of a few limitations. Not like Windows 7/Vista/2008, the snap-in Disk Management in Windows 2003 couldn't support extend/shrink volume. In such case, the only solution is usually to reformat the drive, re-install the Windows Server 2003 Operating System and repartition hard drive. What's more, the Diskpart Command Line is only able to extend a data volume if you find contiguous unallocated space. Thus, it is a wise and good choice to extend system partition for Server 2003 using the advantage of third-party software.

How to choose the Server partition software?

To be sure there are numerous partition software in the area of disk partition management, however, it is not easy for users who have no knowledge to select which one to apply. Norton Partition Magic is a pioneer in this filed. As the question stated, the brand new Partition Magic 8.0 doesn't work in 2003 Server. In line with feedback survey, Aomei Partition Assistant and Acronis Disk Director are the top choice due to their dependability and practicability. That may be, the two software enable user to do basic and advanced functions, such as Windows 2003 resize partition without losing data.

Extend system partition on Windows Server 2003 with third-party solution

Note: To stop sudden shutdown or some other hardware failing, It is best to backup the data prior to the operations.

Step1: Opening Aomei Partition Assistant Server Edition. On a disk map, we are able to discover the system partition is nearly full but D drive is almost empty.

Step2: Right click D partition and choose "Resize" option.

In the pop-up window, drag the left handle rightwards to shrink partition. Then, click "Next".

Step3: Following the above steps, you will see some unallocated space in back of system partition. Choose system partition and pull the right handle rightwards to increase.

Step4: At this moment the modifications is often previewed and as well be detailed in the "Pending Operations". Click "Apply" to carry out them.

The ways to Windows 2003 extend system partition with Acronis Disk Director are almost similar apart from slight differences. How about Free Download and try now!
