How to Maintain a PC in Six Easy Steps

By Herbert Reeves

A computer, as we all know, need to be taken care of regularly. The sad fact however is the very basic things in computer maintenance are often times neglected and this results to faster degradation of the PC. Come on, let's face it, your computer will go away after some time, but non-maintenance will contribute to faster damage to your PC, so you need to constantly do these suggestions below. Keeping them in heart will help your computer last a very long time. But don't just do them once in a while, you should always do them everytime you use a PC, without fail.

1) Most probably, if you're a worker and you constantly deal with lots of docs and files, it is better if you keep clutter from your Desktop and other areas and keep all your files in a single folder. In Windows OS, you can do this on "My Documents". You can also put other files, such as music and photos, on other folders.

2) It may be an enticing idea, or it may seem like a harmless thing to do, but putting your files directly on the root of the Drive C: is actually a really bad and dangerous idea. It promotes a bigger tendency for the disk's tables to be corrupt. As mentioned in step 1, but them on another folder, like "My Documents" or any other subfolder, but never on the root of Drive C: itself.

3) It has always been known that computers accumulate lots of programs and applications and some of them are left unused in the long run. You need to uninstall these programs not by just deleting them, but by going to the Control Panel and then Add/Remove Programs for permanent deletion.

4) Here is another common mistake done by end users: when people download zip files online, the tendency is to leave the zip files after unzipping them. Trust me, unless you need to resend the zip files somewhere else, you won't need your zipped files anymore. Delete them as soon as you can.

5) Smart use of computer is also advised. You should always be wary of whatever you do, especially when browsing the internet. Do not trust pop up ads and the things you are forced to download from them. With regards to emails, approach attachments with care as they can be potential viruses, even attachments that seem to be sent by "friends".

6) Most of the time, OS manufacturers will send their client hot patches or crucial system updates. Don't ever forget to download them because it's for your own system's safety.
