Early Childhood Education Can Be Critical

By Adriana Noton

Among the many changes in our world over the last several decades, few have been as dramatic as the increased need for early childhood education. Gone are the days when children could delay their education and still hope to be competitive with their peers and others around the world. The fast-paced nature of today's economy and the increased use of technology now require an even greater emphasis on educating children at a very young age.

The genesis of the change

For most of human history, children had the opportunity to spend their youngest years of life engaged in childish pursuits. While the demands of agricultural society always seemed to ensure that children had chores to do, that never stopped them from focusing most of their time on play. In addition, the physical nature of most work resulted in a greater reliance on physical development than on any type of formal education.

Computers and the increased use of technology altered that paradigm forever. Information quickly became king in this new world, and employees who could create or manage this information became highly sought after commodities. This greater reliance on mental acuity has accelerated in recent years, and has resulted in new ad greater focus on the educational process.

Where it begins

For most children, the earliest educational efforts begin in the home. Many parents devote time each day to teaching their children the most basic skills that are needed t ensure success in their later educational endeavors. Beginning at around age three in many parts of the world, various types of preschool programs begin to be made available to young children.

These preschool programs were initially formulated to ensure that all children had access to the best developmental systems prior to entering elementary school. Even today, these programs are centered around helping children to develop a better understanding of alphabets, numbers, colors, and other critical information that will become even more important as they get older, as well as the critical social skills they will need to succeed in their later educational endeavors.

Beyond the basics

Even those efforts are not enough for parents intent on giving their children every opportunity to succeed in their educational careers. There are many private companies that have recognized the growing trend in early education and which have created innovative solutions designed to provide even greater advantages to these small children.

Among the fundamental skills offered by these companies are such things as math essentials, reading assistance, and various languages. Such programs are offered in a variety of ways. These methods include computer programs, educational courses over the internet, and in-home tutors. To be sure, there have been few serious studies regarding the real benefits of these programs. Nevertheless, it seems clear that the students who receive such instruction surely obtain some sort of edge over their peers who do not.

Of course, one would have to be living in a cave to believe that even these efforts will suffice in the future. The world keeps growing ever more competitive, as workers in the East and workers in the West all compete with one another for what sometimes seems to be an ever shrinking supply of available jobs. Parents who want their children to be among the truly successful people of the future would do well to provide them with early childhood education today.
