Want To Reduce Your Load Time? Try Image Optimization

By Alice Nance

A large portion of the web's population is still running on good old dialup connections even though more and more Internet users switch to broadband every year. The loading time of your website is a very major consideration we have to make for dialup users and counting them out of the equation when you are designing your own website is an unwise decision.

Even on a dialup connection, all the text on your website will be loaded in a very short time. Large images on your website is the culprit of sites that are slow to load, and striking a delicate balance between using just enough images to attract your users is important and not to bog down the overall loading of your site.

You should also go to a greater length and optimize every image on your site to make sure it loads in the least time possible. What this means is using the image editing software in order for unnecessary information on your images to be removed and so it will be effective to reduce the file size of your image without affecting the appearance.

When you save an image as a JPEG file and you own a Photoshop, it will be obvious to you that you will be able to choose the quality of the JPEG image when a dialog box appears and a setting of 8 to 10 is normally good enough because while saving it at a small file size, the quality of your image will be preserved. But even if you don't have Photoshop, there are still many free image compressors online which you can download and use in order for the file size of your image to be reduced.

To get the best quality at the best file size, another thing you can do is opt to save your images in PNG format. You can also save your images in GIF format -- the image editing software clips away all the color information not used in your image, hence giving you the smallest file size possible. But make your choice wisely since saving in GIF format will often compromise the appearance of your image.
